The Boundary Between Black and White

Fine art black and white nude photo of a reclining woman showing stark contrast between the foregound and background

This is one of the newest additions to the Man Cave Nudes gallery of fine art photos.  The lovely nude model seems to melt into the brilliant white light as she creates the boundary between light and dark. The graceful curves of her body helps soften the transition from foreground to background and leaves you to wonder which world she occupies.

This and many other fine art photos are perfect for anyone who wants art with an edge to decorate their “man cave” or any other space. The prints are produced on durable aluminum sheets that are designed to be displayed without any added bother and expense of framing. Prints on aluminum provide a clean and modern look when you want to display art that makes a statement.

Complementary Curves

Fine art photograph showing the complementar curves of a nude woman. The lighted glass sphere on her back represents her struggles with multiple sclerosis

As always I approached this photo shoot as a collaboration with the model – blending her and my ideas together as we talked about images and meaning. She has been fighting multiple sclerosis for several years so she frequently sees meaning and metaphors in places I wouldn’t expect. In the end that’s what I love about collaborating.

This is a description of the photo written by the model.

“Complementary Curves portrays the weight of the world upon my back. As the light within the globe represents the life force within me. For Life has it’s bends and curves that has complimented my personality, as well as the person that I have worked hard to become.

“I am Imperfect, yet beautiful; I am scared, yet strong; I am concerned, yet confident; and I am inquisitive, yet smart.

“I chose to do this pose in the nude form to show my vulnerability as well as my challenges to my surroundings. Life to me is very nurturing, for I am a child of God.”

Baker’s Dozen

Fine art photo of silhouettes of women draped with reflective tape

During 2017 I started a project where I would ask each model to pose in silhouette with a strip of reflective tape. They were free to do whatever they wanted with the tape. Some wrapped it around themselves, sometimes we tossed it into the air in front of them.

This “Baker’s Dozen” is a composite of best of the set.  Historically a baker’s dozen refers to 13 of something, a regular dozen plus an extra.

Fitting In

Fine art photo showing a partially nude woman with striped light projected onto her torso standing against a horizonally striped background

This fine art photo is titled “Fitting In.”
I did this photo about 2 years. Like most of my photo shoots we didn’t have any particular themes in mind for the shoot. I prefer to “go with the flow” and find inspiration in the moment. The model had brought along a dress with a bold chevron pattern which brought to my mind the idea of a complementary patterns of stripes. I used flash projector called a Light Blaster with a custom transparency I had created to project the stripe pattern and shot a number of variations with the pattern projected onto her as well as onto the background.
3D background used for the fine art photo "Fitting In"The final image shown here is a composite using a frame where the stripe pattern was projected onto her torso. The striped background was created as a 3D object in Photoshop. I felt the background was too perfect so I wanted to create some smudges so I used a faint blurred version of her portrait.
The visibility of the portrait in the background varies a lot depending on the viewing size and resolution. My goal is always to create large high quality fine art prints. In this case, the blurred portrait in the background only becomes visible from around 15 feet away or more on a 16 X 20 inch print.
Over the years I’ve produced a wide assortment of semi-abstract fine art nudes that made distinctive wall décor for man caves or anyplace where you want art with an edge. Prints of “Fitting In” and many other images by me are now available to order online at www.mancavenudes.com.

Yin and Yang, Light and Shadow

Fine art interpretation of the ancient yin and yang symbol for wall decor

Yin and yang come from the Chinese philosophy of seemingly opposite forces connecting and complementing each other. I’ve always been attracted to the graphic simplicity of the symbol and set out to create a fine art figure version representation.

The photo itself was somewhat complex to produce. The most difficult aspect was suspending the heavy camera on a boom so that it was centered over the two models. I used a white circular reflector for the circle with a sheet of black seamless paper underneath to create the design.

Lighting is an important part of any fine art photo and I frequently use a light painting technique where I use a flashlight to paint light onto the subject. In this case I captured numerous different frames where each frame had different areas illuminated. I then used Photoshop to combine the multiple layers of light into a finished image.

The Two Stories of “Woven”

Fine art photo of a man and a woman woven together perfect for man cave wall art decor

“Woven” actually has two stories; the real one and one entirely made up by author C.C. Havens.

The real story is that the two experienced art models were posing for my ArtModels360 website that provides rotatable 360 degree views of artistic nude poses that are used by painters and sculptors to use as reference material.  During the course of photographing numerous different poses I saw one that really caught my eye. Once we were finished with the set for the website we decided to do a couple of our own fine art interpretations of the pose with dramatic lighting to create a work suitable display as a finished piece of fine art wall décor.  “Woven” was the result.

The fictional story about “Woven” came about when author C.C. Havens saw the photo on display at the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival. She was taken with the image and decided to create her own narrative.  The result was far more interesting than the real story so be sure to read it too.

The Story behind “Flare”

Fine art photo showing the imact and emotions associated with multiple sclerosis
“Flare” is a fine art representation of a multiple sclerosis (MS) flare-up. The model in this photo was diagnosed with MS in March of 2007 and despite the battle she has continued to model whenever she can.  When we planned our photo shoot last year one of our goals was to create imagery that was both a striking visual creation and also tells her story with MS.

Her words describe this result much better than I can:

“The globe in my hands represents my brain as the luminescent light around it in black and white symbolizes the flare-ups seen in an MRI image. I’m raising it above me to symbolize my determination to keep my head held high while attempting to overcome the many obstacles that lie ahead.

“The colored shape of my body symbolizes the human form and the emotions I endure daily though strength and courage. The shadow reflected beside me represents the vulnerability and pain that is my reality.

“The jagged light tracing down my back symbolizes the electrical impulse patterns and frequencies of damaged nerve tissue that can cause an MS patient a temporary or permanent disability.

“The netting around my waist represents the numerous nerves throughout the body that can also suffer from damage.

“I’m sitting upon my knees with my feet crossed as if begging for a cure. While the electrical impulse lighting on the floor represents millions of others around me who suffer from the same disease.

“The lighted fire arising from the shadow symbolizes the fight and fire inside from all to preserve life as the fight for a cure continues.”

I think we succeeded in accomplishing our goals.

Breaking Free

"Breaking Free" fine art image by Craig Stocks featured on mancavenudes.com

I love collaborating with models and other artists to create fine art photography and this is a fantastic example of why I love the process so much. This model’s insight into this  photograph completely changed how I think and feel about the image.

This particular image really resonated with the model but I didn’t understand why until a couple months later when she asked me to prepare a framed print. It was going to be donated to a charity auction in Chicago to support domestic violence awareness.

She suggested the title for the piece, “Breaking Free.” Then she wrote the artistic statement that will accompany the piece:

The model in this photograph is a survivor of 25 years of domestic violence. She believes the piece poignantly captures the residual internal strife which remains to date, several years later.

The dark lines represent the prison bars and shackles, as she felt imprisoned in the relationship. Her hidden face is emphasized by crossed hands and raised legs, which appear an attempt to shield her from harm. The mottled shadowed areas at the rib cage, hip and underside of the arm resemble the physical bruises once endured.

The brightly lit areas represent present life. The absence of clothing is a sign of both rebirth and renewed strength.

It is the model’s hope that “Breaking Free” will raise awareness of the lingering emotional impacts of domestic violence. Additionally, she hopes this piece will simultaneously provide encouragement to current victims that there is beauty and new life in survival.

Now I understand why this image is so important to the model.

Hiding in Plain Sight

Hiding in Plain Sight, one of many fine art nude photos by Craig Stocks

Hiding in Plain Sight was an exercise in patience to create. The story began in the fall of 2012 when I went to a local farm to create an environmental portrait of a writer. As we explored the location I discovered this abandoned corn crib that was constructed of wooden slats. The setting sun created an amazing pattern of light and shadow that both illuminated and obscured the view.

Thus my vision for the image was born. I love mystery in my images and rarely seek to fully display the subject. The light in corn crib created the perfect opportunity to have a nude figure hidden in plain sight.

But it was not a quick project.  My first challenge was finding  a model. The first model I hired never showed up. I had talked to her on the phone, exchanged emails, and we both confirmed the shoot and the plan the day before. But when the day of the shoot came, she didn’t. She didn’t show up, she didn’t call, or email, or text. In fact, we haven’t had any communication since then.

So, I hired a second model. She arrived right on time and did a wonderful job modeling.  But there was another problem. By that time a number of weeks had passed and the setting sun was now directly behind a large grain silo just west of the corn crib. As soon as the shadows started to become pronounced they all just disappeared as the corn crib fell into shadow. We still got a great photo (“Celebration”) but not this one.

At that point I realized I needed to plan for the sun’s position. It turned out that there was a fairly narrow window of opportunity when the sun would set unobstructed by the silo, trees or the farm house. That left a few weeks in the spring when it would be too cold and a few weeks in the fall.

Finally in the fall of 2013, a full year later, I was able to get access to the corn crib and a clear evening. This was one of my first times working with this model but we have worked together many times since then.

I love the final result and it was worth the wait. The light reveals the shape of the corn crib while also hiding the details. Her pose is perfect, both obvious and anonymous. The S-curve of her pose created a strong contrast the to hard horizontal and diagonal lines of the barn.
